Cottonwood and Juniper Campgrounds - General Information
All of the individual sites in Juniper Campground (north unit) and half of the individual sites in Cottonwood Campground (south unit) are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The remaining half of the Cottonwood Campground sites are reservable. To make reservations, contact recreation.gov or call 1-877-444-6777. (Theodore Roosevelt National Park cannot make reservations.)
Juniper and Cottonwood Campgrounds are located along the Little Missouri River. Cottonwood trees provide partial shade during summer months when leaves are green. Both campgrounds are open year-round with reduced rates and limited amenities in the winter. During summer, numerous potable water spigots are available as well as bathroom facilities with running water and flush toilets (no showers). In winter, one spigot for potable water is available at Cottonwood Campground and vault toilets are available in both campgrounds. There are no hookups in either campground.
Stay at the Sully Creek State Park Campground which is just south of Medora. There are no electrical hookups but there is potable water at each campsite, plus a great shower house (costs $1 for a shower) and nice vault toilets (several of them). There is a dumpsite right at the campground. Has great gravel roads, nicely mowed, and few insects. There are also horse corrals there for those riding the Maah Daah Hey Trail (which is why we were there) and the trailhead goes out of the campground. The campground is well maintained and Roger, the Ranger, is the nicest most helpful guy ever It's a short 5 min drive to Medora. Highly recommend the Sully Creek Campground. You can find it on the web under North Dakota State Parks.
